Former Citibank employee sentenced for Salomon Brothers theft

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former Citigroup Inc employee was sentenced to more than four years in prison for stealing $1.3 million from a 98-year-old former managing partner at investment bank Salomon Brothers.

U.S. District Judge William Martini on Tuesday handed the sentence to Karen Febles, 48, an executive assistant at Citibank assigned to work for William Salomon from 2000 to 2011. Salomon Brothers was absorbed by Citigroup as part of a 1997 merger.

The judge also ordered Febles to pay more than $1.1 million in restitution.

Febles' attorney did not return a call for comment. Neither did Salomon's lawyer. A spokesman for the Department of Justice declined to comment. Citibank also declined comment.

On dozens of occasions between 2005 and 2011, Febles altered the amounts on checks signed by Salomon and pocketed the difference, federal prosecutors said.

Febles spent the money on luxury cars and cruises, among other purchases, and maintained bank accounts for her young son, the prosecutors said.

A jury in federal court in New Jersey convicted Febles in January of bank fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and tax evasion for failing to pay more than $250,000 in taxes.

In a separate case, William Salomon sued Citigroup in May, claiming the company failed to properly supervise Febles as she committed "systematic theft," which he claimed totaled $3 million. That case is pending in state court in New York.

The company has said it was not responsible for the theft because Febles was acting outside the scope of her employment in handling Salomon's personal finances.

The case is United States v. Karen Febles, New Jersey District Court 2:12-cr-00406.

Researchers uncover little-known internment camp

Deep in the mountains of northern Idaho, miles from the nearest town, lays evidence of a little-known portion of a shameful chapter of American history.

There are no buildings, signs or markers to indicate what happened at the site 70 years ago, but researchers sifting through the dirt have found broken porcelain, old medicine bottles and lost artwork identifying the location of the first internment camp where the U.S. government used people of Japanese ancestry as a workforce during World War II.

Today, a team of researchers from the University of Idaho wants to make sure the Kooskia Internment Camp isn't forgotten to history.

Production of The Godfather was a legendarily tumultuous ordeal between Francis Ford Coppola and Paramount Pictures, from the choice to hire him all the way through the release of the film. Casting was a particularly ugly back-and-forth, as the studio suggested Ernest Borgnine for Vito Corleone and Robert Redford or Ryan O?Neal for Michael. But Coppola had extensive ideas for potential casting, displayed by a handwritten list of actors from preproduction, on display at Coppola?s wineries in Napa. Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall are all on the list?as well as Godfather Part II cast member Robert DeNiro?but the other notable names offer a completely different vision of the film. Imagine if Laurence Olivier, Dustin Hoffman, Peter Falk, and Peter Donat won the roles of Vito, Michael, Sonny, and Tom Hagen. Or more intriguingly, look at all the unrecognizable names that could have been a part of one of the most iconic films ever made, but just didn?t quite make the cut.

House Republicans vote to ban nontheist military chaplains

The Republican led U.S. House of Representatives has approved a measure that would discriminate against secular humanists and other freethinkers serving in the military by banning nontheists from serving as military chaplains.

In a vote taken Tuesday, July 23, the House voted 253-173 to approve an amendment to a House defense spending bill that prohibits the Department of Defense from ?allowing non-believers to serve as chaplains.?

The amendment, sponsored by Rep. John Fleming, R-Minden, passed along mainly party lines, with all but six Republican House members voting to support the amendment.

Critics claim the Republican sponsored amendment is a reaction to grass roots efforts to allow humanists and other nontheists to serve as military chaplains. For example, The Friendly Atheist reports that last month, Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ) suggested an amendment to the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act that would allow Humanist, ethical culturist, or atheist chaplains in the Army Chaplains Corps:

The Secretary of Defense shall provide for the appointment, as officers in the Chaplain Corps of the Armed Forces, of persons who are certified or ordained by non-theistic organizations and institutions, such as humanist, ethical culturalist, or atheist.

Edwina Rogers, executive director of the Secular Coalition for America, points out the importance of nontheist military chaplains:

"Chaplains for nontheistic military service members are absolutely crucial for so many men and women who are serving our country. Religious chaplains are ill equipped to handle the problems of nontheistic service members and unfortunately, seeking psychiatric help can stigmatize a service member for the rest of their career.?

Last month, House Republicans mocked and insulted atheists and other nontheists serving in the military while rejecting an amendment to the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act that would allow humanists and others ?ordained by non-theistic organizations and institutions? to join the Chaplain Corps of the Armed Forces.

Rome Police charge man in Lawrence Street homicide

Rome (WSYR-TV) ? Rome Police have arrested a man who they believe killed 50-year-old Charles Digristine in March.

Police have charged 24-year-old Derrick Carter of Utica with second-degree murder.

Police arrested him after a four-month investigation.

Digristine was found at his home at 115 Lawrence St. with multiple gunshot wounds on March 26.

Carter was arraigned in Oneida County Court.

He is being held in the Oneida County jail.

Star Parker - Blocking Walmart from Washington, D.C., would hurt poor

Why, when capitalism has created wealth and eradicated poverty, do left-wing politicians hate it so much? After all, it's supposed to be the left that cares about the poor.

The latest chapter in this ongoing saga of economic perversity is playing out in Washington, D.C., as the district attempts to prevent Wal-Mart Stores Inc. from opening outlets there.

The district's city council has passed a bill, awaiting signature of Mayor Vincent Gray, specifically targeted to block the company. It raises the district's minimum wage to $12.50 per hour only for stores with more than $1 billion in sales and store size of more the 75,000 square feet.

Unionized stores in the district with these characteristics are exempt. In other words, the bill protects special interests and blocks entities politicos don't want: Walmart stores.

The company promptly announced that if the mayor signs the bill into law, it will cancel plans to open three of six planned stores, each of which would create around 300 new jobs.

The chain's "low prices every day" business strategy is one of the greatest success stories in American history. Since opening its first store in 1962, the company has grown exponentially. Today, it has sales of almost a half-trillion dollars, putting it first on the Fortune 500 list for highest revenue.

According to corporate officials, the company has more 10,000 stores around the world, employs 2.2 million people and serves 200 million customers per week.

Is anyone forced to shop there? Of course not. Is anyone forced to work at a Walmart? Of course not.

This mind-boggling growth happened as a result of freedom. The chain's huge success is the result of delivering products that people freely choose to buy.

Critics claim that the company doesn't pay enough. The company responds that its pay is at or above the industry average.

But the real issue is: Why is what the company pays the business of politicians? Unlike government -- that fines you or jails you if you don't do what lawmakers want -- people work at Walmarts because they choose to do so.

The company says it gets anywhere from 10,000 to 25,000 applications for 300 to 400 job openings when it opens a store. That's more than 25 applicants per job.

It doesn't appear to me that the chain has trouble convincing people to work there.

The population of Washington, D.C., is more than 50 percent African-American. The unemployment rate is above the national average. The poverty rate is above the national average. Yet politicians would rather have no new jobs at $12.50 per hour than 900 new jobs at $10 per hour.

Some claim that big discount stores displace small businesses. This is a claim. There is no definitive study that proves this claim.

But again, even if true, it would only be true because free people choose it to be so. What business is it of politicians to tell free people where to shop? What business is it of politicians to deprive people the freedom to go to a store that sells them products at the lowest prices they can find?

Low-income earners -- those whom the left-wing politicos supposedly care about -- happen to appreciate Walmart stores' low prices.

One thing I particularly appreciate about Walmart, where I certainly shop, is the greeters. They are often disabled and other difficult-to-employ individuals. The company gives them a chance to work.

Capitalism has been a great success because it rewards creativity and hard work. Socialism has been a failure because it deprives freedom, stifles creativity, encourages envy and rewards sloth and corruption.

American success is about the miracle of freedom. When freedom is displaced by political power, everyone suffers. In this case in Washington, D.C., where politicians are blocking Walmart, those who will suffer the most are the poor.

Duchess Kate in labor at London hospital

LONDON -- Prince William's wife, Kate, is in the early stages of labor in a private wing of a central London hospital, palace officials said Monday.

It is a historic moment for the British monarchy -- the couple's first child will become third in line for the British throne, after Prince Charles and William, and should eventually become king or queen.

William and Kate entered St. Mary's Hospital in central London through a side door early Monday morning, avoiding the world's media. Palace officials confirmed her arrival about 90 minutes later.

Royal officials said they traveled by car, without a police escort, just before 6 a.m. Kate -- also known as the Duchess of Cambridge -- is expected to give birth in the private Lindo Wing of the hospital, where Princess Diana also gave birth to William and his younger brother, Prince Harry.

"Things are progressing as normal," the couple's spokesman said.

She will be looked after by a top-notch medical team led by royal gynecologist Dr. Marcus Setchell. Palace officials are not expected to provide many details about how her labor is progressing.

The baby is in line to become Britain's monarch and be recognized as head of state in 15 other countries, including Canada and Australia, playing a leading role in charting the future of the Commonwealth.

But little else is known, including how the baby will arrive -- it is not clear if Kate will have a natural birth or deliver by a planned cesarean

section -- its gender and its name.

Royal watchers must wait to be told of the baby's arrival from the palace, which is planning to reveal the news through a mixture of tradition and social media.

Palace officials have said that the first hint will come when a royal aide emerges from the hospital with a signed bulletin carrying the Buckingham Palace letterhead. The bulletin will be given to an official who will be driven to Buckingham Palace, where it will be posted on an easel in public view in front of the building.

At the same time the bulletin is posted, there will be an official announcement on Twitter and the media will be formally notified. The document will give the baby's gender, weight and time of birth.

It could be some time before the baby's name is made public. When William was born, a week passed before his name was announced. Charles's name remained a mystery for an entire month.

But it is the baby's gender that is of particular interest because the prospect of Kate's pregnancy prompted a change to laws of succession to ensure a daughter would not be passed over for the crown by a younger brother. Boy or girl, the child will be the prospective future monarch.

The birth of a new heir to the throne has been breathlessly anticipated by many Britons since William and Kate wed on April 29, 2011.

Despite a rough start to the pregnancy, when she was hospitalized for acute morning sickness, the 31-year-old Kate made a number of public appearances that were halted only near the end of her term.

Since the duchess has cut back on her royal duties, media outlets have been clamoring for position outside of the hospital in anticipation of the birth, jockeying to secure the best vantage point for filming William and Kate emerging, babe in arms.

At Buckingham Palace, where the birth will be announced, tourists packed near the front gate, peering through the black iron bars to catch of a glimpse of any action.

Two New York teachers, Maddalena Buffalino, 29, and Michael Savino, 32, were quizzing a pair of passing police officers about where the easel would be placed.

"Just being here is very cool," said Buffalino, who said she'd been following royal baby news intently.

She said the tradition and glamor of the royal household was what attracted Americans like her to the palace.

"It's the history," the social studies teacher said. "We don't have it."

Police eventually shooed the growing crush of tourists away from the gate, with one officer warning the assembled crowd to keep an eye on their wallets and valuables.

Officials have said that William plans to take two weeks' paternity leave and then return to his military duties as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot in Wales.

His tour of duty is scheduled to wrap up around September, and he and Kate are expected to move from their isolated cottage on the island of Anglesey off the coast of Wales to Kensington Palace in central London.

But major refurbishment works at the palace likely won't be finished until at least a month or two after the infant is born -- meaning that William and Kate will most likely have to make do with their current temporary home in London, a two-bedroom property at the palace.

Come autumn, however, the family will be able to move into their permanent London home, Apartment 1a at Kensington Palace -- a four-story house with a nursery, 20 rooms and a private garden.

Foodie Updates: Chef Change at Betelnut, a New Arcade/Bar in Union Square, and More

This week in restaurant news, we have a major chef change at one of the Marina's most popular eateries; a new adult playland, complete with skeeball, opening near Union Square; and the expansion of Smitten Ice Cream.

First up, the big news of the past week was the announcement that longtime Betelnut chef Alex Ong has decided to depart the restaurant and go off on his own. The news follows on a rocky six months in which the Real Restaurants Group (which also owns Fog City Diner, soon to be rechristened Fog City, Bix, and Zero Zero) decided to overhaul the restaurant and rename it Hutong, with Ong's help, adding more of a street food theme. But fans of the original, including Michael Bauer, didn't dig the change, and they quickly reverted back to Betelnut. A short while ago they hired chef de cuisine?Mario Tolentino, and he'll be taking over for Ong as executive chef.?Here's hoping that Ong will find a home for his Beggar's Chicken and other excellent food soon. Now softly open in Union Square, across the street from the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, is Golden Gate Tap Room, in the former Golden Gate Grill space that was once home to the S.F. Press Club. The vast, double-height space has been transformed by Lori's Diner owner Man J. Kim into a bar and restaurant with a ton of arcade games, pool tables, two shuffleboard tables, 20 flat-screen TVs, and three skeeball ramps. There's a menu of a 100 beers to choose from, as well as some wines, and sports-bar-friendly food. [Eater]

As you may have heard, Virginia Ramos, the famed Tamale Lady, has been disallowed by the Health Department to keep her mobile, rolling-cooler-based business as is, and she's now got a little over a month to raise to $155,000 on this IndieGogo campaign so she can open her own brick-and-mortar shop. At age 60, she probably shouldn't be hauling that cooler around bar to bar anyway. [Tablehopper]

Smitten Ice Cream, which found its first home in the Proxy development in Hayes Valley, has just announced that they are expanding to Rockridge in Oakland, and down in Los Altos. [Inside Scoop]

US builders start work on fewer homes in June

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. builders started work on fewer homes in June, mostly because apartment construction fell sharply. But applications for permits to build single-family houses rose to the highest level in five years, suggesting the housing recovery will continue.

Developers began construction at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 836,000 homes in June, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That was nearly 10 percent below May's total of 928,000, which was revised higher, and was the fewest since August 2012.

Most of the drop occurred in apartments, where starts fell almost 27 percent in June from May. Apartment construction is volatile from month-to-month.

Applications for permits to build single-family homes rose for the third straight month to 624,000, the highest since May 2008. That suggests home construction should rebound in the coming months. Overall permits fell to 911,000 in June from 985,000 in May, which was also revised higher.

Despite June's decline, builders started work on 10 percent more homes last month compared with a year earlier. And permits are 16 percent higher than a year ago.

"Today's drop in starts is more a pause in an otherwise improving trend," said Jonathan Basile, an economist at Credit Suisse.

The housing recovery has been helping support the economy at a critical time when manufacturing and business investment have stagnated.

Steady job growth and low mortgage rates have fueled more home sales. The increased demand, along with a tight supply of homes for sale, has pushed home prices higher. That's encouraged builders to start more homes and create more construction jobs.

Confidence among homebuilders rose this month to its highest level since January 2006, according to a monthly survey by the National Association of Home Builders. Measures of customer traffic, current sales conditions and builders' outlook for single-family home sales over the next six months vaulted to their highest levels in at least seven years.

Rising home prices also tend to make homeowners feel wealthier and more likely to spend. That drives more growth because consumers' spending accounts for roughly 70 percent of economic activity.

One concern is that mortgage rates have started to rise from their record lows and could spike further if the Federal Reserve slows its stimulus. Average rates on a 30-year mortgage rose to 4.5 percent this week, the highest in two years, according to mortgage buyer Freddie Mac.

Higher mortgage rates could slow the housing rebound, although most economists aren't concerned. They note that other factors are more important to the recovery, such as steady job gains, economic growth, and an increasing willingness among banks to lend.

Though new homes represent only a fraction of the housing market, they have an outsize impact on the economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to NAHB statistics.

YC-Backed RealCrowd Rides The Crowdfunding Wave To Pool Capital For Real Estate Investments

Hardware projects. T-shirts. People. Scientific research. Crowdfunding is getting applied to every possible niche vertical. Now a Y Combinator-backed team is looking to bring crowdfunding to real estate, with big-ticket projects that often start at around a $10 million range. Called RealCrowd, the startup is the brainchild of Adam Hooper and Roman Rosario, two longstanding real estate investors who worked for a Sacramento-based brokerage called Palmer Capital. At Palmer, Hooper and Rosario helped closed on more than $3 billion in investment transactions and was involved in managing investments in buildings like the ones on 625 Market St. or 260 California St. in San Francisco. “There have been very few actual technology improvements with real estate investments over the last few decades, so the opportunity to change that only happens once in a life time,” Hooper said. RealCrowd is aiming to give accredited investors the chance to put in as little as $5,000 to $10,000 to participate in larger commercial real estate transactions. Each property on the site is vetted and features a business plan, detailing any kinds of improvements or maintenance that may be needed over the life of the investment. RealCrowd clients become minority stakeholders that entrust the operations and maintenance of the property to a real estate operator vetted by RealCrowd. Because Hooper and Rosario have been in the business for so long, they say they’ve accumulated enough relationships to know trustworthy operators, that will have profiles with their track records on the site. “Going into it, you’ll know if the plan is for a 25-year lease to Walgreens with no capital improvements — which is a very straightforward deal, or whether it’s to buy a building in SOMA and renovate it,” Hooper said. While every deal is totally unique, each RealCrowd investor would ideally receive rental cashflow or returns in proportion to their stake in the property. RealCrowd takes a small transaction fee and an asset management fee to cover their administrative expenses, which would probably be in the 2 to 4 percent range of total equity committed upfront and then a 0.5 to 1 percent annual asset management fee. Hooper says this is less than the fees an investor would pay to participate in a REIT, or real estate investment trust, where 15 percent might go toward fees before investing in the property. A few weeks ago, Calgary played host to TEDxYYC, which? is an independently organized event under the umbrella of TED.? This year?s event was attended by nearly a 1,000 people and I was one of them.

The day featured a slew of presentations from almost every facet imaginable, but three have definitely stuck with me and since the event?s organizers just posted all the videos, I?m happy that I can share them and hopefully they?ll stay with you too.

The first video (above) was a performance by one of Calgary?s biggest bands in the making, Reuben and the Dark. The rock-indie quartet has just signed on with Arts and Crafts, so it really is a matter of time until the band takes off big time. Watch the video and you?ll see why. Instead of giving a speech, the guys played two songs, including their new single ?Shoulderblade.? By the time they were done, the audience knew that two songs from Reuben and the Dark is simply never enough. The band is currently on tour, so you have to check them out.

Out of all the speakers, I was perhaps most excited to see Rebecca Northan. The actress has won rave reviews on both Broadway and the West End for her improv-heavy show Blind Date.? She?s also appeared in countless TV shows, but despite all that, I?ve never seen her on stage. I know, I?m a terrible blogger/Calgarian/Canadian. But it?s true. I can?t deny it. So for me, the opportunity to see Northan on the TEDxYYC stage was an opportunity that I did not take lightly. During her 15 minute presentation about the behaviours we manifest when we?re afraid, she invoked laughter, tears and a very well-deserved standing ovation.

Long Beach Vice Mayor Robert Garcia to announce mayoral plans

LONG BEACH - Vice Mayor Robert Garcia announced through a video released on social media on Wednesday that he is entering next year's mayoral contest.

The move comes a day after Mayor Bob Foster said he would not seek a third term.

Garcia, 35, is also a member of the California Coastal Commission and a professor at the University of Southern California. In 2007, he co-founded the Long Beach Post, a local news website.

Four others have already filed papers to run for mayor: Damon Dunn, a businessman and former NFL player; nonprofit education founder Jana K. Shields, Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske and Long Beach City College Trustee Doug Otto.

Both Garcia and Schipske are openly gay and arguably the best-known candidates to declare a bid so far.

Other prospective candidates include Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, her former daughter-in-law, Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal, and former Councilwoman Rae Gabelich.

Councilwoman Suja Lowenthal said she is giving "serious consideration" to running, and Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, reached by email while on vacation, did not rule out a campaign for mayor.

"I'm still absorbing the news,"

Lowenthal said. "Bob has been an outstanding Mayor who has taken the city through some tough times, and I was anticipating supporting him. This is a very important office, and I would love to do the job. Of course I'm going to look at it, but I have to talk to my family."

Gabelich could not be reached for comment.

Israeli premier phones European leaders after ban

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's premier talked with a series of European leaders Wednesday, outlining his strong objections to a European funding ban on Israeli institutions operating in occupied territories, officials said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the measure with the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso as well as the leaders of France, Greece, Malta and Austria, the officials said.

They said Netanyahu told the leaders, "There are more urgent and pressing issues in the Middle East that should be dealt with first," like the conflict in Syria and Iran's nuclear program.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the content of the conversations with reporters.

Israeli media reported that Netanyahu urged the leaders to delay the ban's enforcement.

The EU decision, announced on Tuesday, marked a new international show of displeasure with Israeli settlements built on lands captured in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians claim some of those territories ? the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem ? for their hoped-for state. The announcement sparked a round of condemnations from Israeli leaders, including Netanyahu, who said Israel would not accept "external edicts" about its borders.

The officials also said Netanyahu spoke to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry about the EU decision, saying it harms Kerry's efforts to restart negotiations. Israel's chief peace negotiator, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, met Wednesday with the European Union envoy for Mideast peace, Andreas Reinicke, and told him that postponing the ban's enforcement would help relaunch peace talks, which stalled nearly five years ago.

The EU said the ban applies to "grants, prizes and financial instruments and that the new funding guidelines go into effect in 2014. The EU issues dozens of grants, totaling millions of euros, to Israeli universities, companies and researchers every year.

Also Wednesday, Israel's state comptroller criticized Israel's lack of law enforcement in the West Bank, saying the lawlessness has allowed for illegal construction in the West Bank by both Israelis and Palestinians. In the report, the military was quoted as saying its inspectors at times encounter "strong resistance" from Jewish settlers when trying to enforce laws against illegal construction.

Some 500,000 Israelis live in Jewish settlements scattered through the West Bank and around east Jerusalem. In addition, the West Bank is dotted with smaller settlements and outposts not formally sanctioned by the government. The Palestinians and the international community view all of Israel's West Bank settlements as illegal.

The comptroller, Joseph Shapira, pointed to "significant shortcomings, some of them serious" in the coordination between the police and the military, tasked with enforcing law in the territory. Israel retains overall control of the West Bank, while a Western-backed Palestinian government has self-rule in areas where more than 90 percent of the Palestinians live.

The report noted other fields in which the law is often violated, such as water theft and environmental standards.

Former Lobo Tony Snell keeps winning in the Thomas & Mack Center.

Monday night, the Chicago Bulls first-round draft pick scored 11 points, including going 7-of-9 from the free throw line, in a 93-81 win over the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

Monday?s game was played in the Thomas & Mack Center, home of the UNLV Running Rebels and site of Snell?s breakout Mountain West Conference Tournament MVP performance in March when UNM won its second-consecutive league title with three wins on the same court. In Saturday?s Summer League debut for Snell, the Bulls beat the Memphis Grizzlies in the adjacent Cox Pavilion.

Also on Monday night, former Lobo Drew Gordon had a team-high six rebounds for the Sacramento Kings in an 80-66 NBA Summer League loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Gordon, who started the game, also had two points and one blocked shot in 19 minutes of play.

Braves 1B Freeman's All-Star status in question

ATLANTA (AP) ? Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman has a thumb injury that is preventing him from playing Sunday and leaves his status for the All-Star game in question.

Freeman says he jammed his left thumb on the first play of Saturday night's 5-2 win over the Reds. Shortstop Andrelton Simmons fielded Chris Heisey's grounder and threw slightly wide of first base, forcing Freeman to catch the ball in Heisey's path. Heisey hit Freeman's glove and was out.

Freeman remained in the game and is wearing a soft splint on his hand on Sunday.

Evan Gattis, who had been out since June 18 with a right oblique strain, was activated from the 15-day disabled list and is starting at first base. A corresponding move has not been announced.

Microsoft might upgrade Xbox One specifications to fight the PlayStation 4

Looks like Microsoft is doing all it can between now and the final release of the Xbox One next-generation game console to close the gap between the Xbox One and the undeniably more powerful Sony PlayStation 4.

It?s no breaking news now. Ever unbiased soul (with the word ?gamer? etched onto them) is disappointed with the Xbox One. Microsoft?s next-generation console tries to be a home entertainer and a set-top box with added abilities instead of a true gaming powerhouse, something that we?ve been waiting for a couple of years now. The Sony PlayStation 4 on the other hand has one primary focus, gaming. And it shows in the console?s dedication to powerful hardware, easy-to-develop console design (a unified GDDR5 memory pool to be accessed by the CPU and GPU is far easier than the complicated eSRAM?model used by Microsoft). Additionally, the PS4 specifications with respect to the GPU (graphics processing unit, one of the most important parts of a ?gaming? console) and RAM are far superior than the solutions found powering the Xbox One.

Not only did Microsoft go with a smaller GPU (the PS4 GPU made by AMD has 50% more processing cores, that?s a hefty increase) but also picked ultra-cheap DDR3 RAM (which should become extinct by the time these consoles reach their middle ages) which provides nearly 1/3rd the bandwidth provided by the screaming-fast GDDR5 RAM used in the PS4. And? The Xbox One is a bigger box, has an external power brick, doesn?t leave you with an option but to buy the (NSA funded, part of PRISM program) Kinect 2.0 add-on and then costs a whole $100 extra. For those who are going to start blaring your foghorns that the memory latency associated with GDDR5 will cripple the console, read what PS4 architect Mark Cerny has to say:

Latency in GDDR5 isn?t particularly higher than the latency in DDR3. On the GPU side? Of course, GPUs are designed to be extraordinarily latency tolerant so I can?t imagine that being much of a factor.

Now, coming to the small news that publication Examiner has reported. Microsoft is allegedly planning to pack 12 GB of RAM in the final Xbox One console when it ships later this year, in November. While hardware revisions so late into the development cycle seldom happen, Xbox One dev kits with 12 GB DDR3 RAM already exist. A prime reason why Microsoft has gone for an increase in the RAM capacity could be because only 5 GB of the total 8 GB would be available to developers (to be put to use by games). The PS4 in contrast offers 7 GB of its total 8 GB RAM, that?s a whole 2 GB of 170 GB/s bandwidth capable RAM extra to Sony?s console. The story behind the PS4 ending up with 8 GB of RAM is an interesting one too:

That was really a case where our developer-driven process worked. So we received feedback, we listened to the feedback, we altered the hardware as a result. As far as how late it was in the process, actually what you?re seeing there is just the developers were very, very good about keeping information confidential. As near as I can tell that all came from one rogue hacker, who wasn?t even disclosed by us, how managed to hack into a developer and extract both the Microsoft and Sony documentation.

Thank god that they doubled capacity from 4 GB to 8 GB, else I?d have been writing this very same article in the exact opposite direction today. A more plausible way for Microsoft to deal with the RAM limitation would be to re-allocate resources. Instead of letting the OS and background processes (we don?t need Netflix running in the background all the time, or Skype, or your spying software for that matter) eat up 3 GB of RAM, Microsoft could potentially cut that down to 1.5 GB or 1 GB and allocate the remaining 6.5 GB to 7 GB RAM for games (hear us MS, hear us!).

There?s also another rumor floating about that Microsoft might increase the clock speed of the Xbox One GPU. Now we can?t say if this is true, but it is entirely plausible for it to be. Sadly, we don?t see much advantage because the required clock speed increase to match up to something which has 50% more RAW hardware, the Xbox One GPU will simply run into thermal limitations. The best MS can do is to try and?close the gap, as much as possible, without frying the console units. Additionally, the Xbox One development team is taking feedback from game developers asking for the possible changes that they?d like to see in the console. One thing from our side to Microsoft, it?s a little bit too late.

Experts Recover Military Personnel Records 40 Years After Fire

WASHINGTON, July 12, 2013 ? Forty years ago today, an enormous fire erupted at the National Personnel Records Center in suburban St. Louis. Burning uncontrollably for almost 24 hours, it destroyed some 16 million to 18 million military personnel records including official documents veterans need to apply for the benefits they?ve earned.

Today, a team of about 30 people continues to put the pieces back together. They use the latest restoration techniques so reference technicians can gleam details from charred and water-damaged documents.

?It?s like a MASH [Mobile Army Surgical Hospital] unit,? Marta O?Neill, who heads the National Personnel Records Center?s Preservation Lab, said during a telephone interview. ?There may be 15 different routes that a record could take so we can still preserve the information and get the benefits to the veteran.?

The July 12, 1973, fire destroyed up to 80 percent of the 22 million records of veterans of the Army, Army Air Force and Air Force who served between 1912 and 1963, reported William Seibert, senior archivist and chief of archival operations at the National Archives in St. Louis.

About 85 percent of the records of soldiers discharged between 1912 and 1959, including veterans of World War II and the Korean War, went up in smoke. In addition, about 75 percent of the records of airman with last names beginning with ?H? through ?Z? who left service between 1947 and 1963 were lost.

The true extent of the loss remains a mystery, because the center had no central registry of its holdings at the time, explained Seibert. Even if it was physically possible to reconstruct every single missing document, nobody knows for sure which ones they are, he said.

Records are being tracked down and, when necessary, restored, by request. And four decades after the fire, requests for documents from the burned holdings or ?B-Files? continue to roll in at the rate of 200 to 300 every day, O?Neill said.

Some come from veterans needing a record of their service to receive federal health-care, home loans or other veterans? benefits, she said. A homeless veteran, for example, may need a copy of his or her DD-214 discharge certificate to qualify for Department of Veterans Affairs-sponsored shelters or meals.

Sometimes requests come from veterans? families, needing the records to apply for entitlements on their loved one?s behalf, or to have them buried in a national cemetery. In some cases, family members may need the records to qualify for scholarships or other benefits based on their family?s military affiliation.

Other requests also come from historians or genealogists trying to piece together their own family histories.

Fulfilling those requests can be as straightforward as tracking down one of the estimated 6.5 million records recovered from the fire, all now stored in temperature- and humidity-controlled conditions at the new National Personnel Records Center outside St. Louis.

The effort can become slightly more difficult if it requires cross-referencing of other official records to ferret out and verify the information needed.

But in other cases, fulfilling a records request involves the painstaking and time-intensive process of reconstructing a document blackened by fire, soaked with water or tainted with mold.

This is highly detailed work that O?Neill said demands both patience and a steady hand. In addition to a fulltime staff of 24, her team of technicians relies on the help of college interns eager to get hands-on experience in document preservation.

Donning gloves to handle the fragile materials, they use special equipment and techniques to clean documents of debris and mold, separate pages stuck together for the past 40 years and piece together brittle fragments into more complete documents.

State-of-the-art digital technology now helps them reconstruct documents once considered beyond repair, O?Neill said. ?You can?t reverse ash,? she said. ?But you can use scanners and digital software to enhance the document so the text on the burned part can be lifted and revealed. Basically, you look at a piece of ash, and when you digitally enhance it, you can see the writing on it.?

Regardless of what it takes, O?Neill said she and her staff get tremendous gratification from their mission -- as preservationists, archivists and human beings. They delight in taking something badly damaged and making it, although not like new, better than most people could ever imagine possible, she said.

From the archival perspective, they enjoy reconstructing history, one document at a time. Since 1999, official military personnel records are now among the small percentage of government records now maintained permanently, based on their historical significance, she noted.

But the biggest reward of the mission, she said, is being able to recover documents that can make a real difference in someone?s life.

?We are helping so many people in so many ways,? she said.

Dana White talking with Anderson Silva about a rematch with Chris Weidman, but no deal is done

UFC president Dana White said he was in Los Angeles on Friday, meeting with ex-middleweight champion Anderson Silva about the possibility of a rematch with new champion Chris Weidman.

But White vehemently denied a report in GQ Brazil (Editor's note: Story is in Portuguese) in which Silva was quoted as saying the rematch was made for Dec. 28 at UFC 168 in Las Vegas. Right now, a women's bantamweight title fight between Ronda Rousey and archrival Miesha Tate headlines that card.

There has been much speculation about whether a rematch would be made, and Weidman, during a post-victory media tour earlier this week, told several outlets that a rematch was a done deal and would be held in either December or February.

Weidman won the title by knocking Silva out at UFC 162 at the MGM Grand Garden on July 6, handing the great Brazilian the first UFC loss of his career.

White told Yahoo! Sports via telephone earlier in the week that he felt the bout could draw a massive crowd to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, but said "This just feels like one of those huge Vegas fights to me." White has repeatedly said he thinks Silva-Weidman II will be the largest-grossing, best-selling pay-per-view card in UFC history.

"We are talking about a rematch and I am and have been confident I will get it done," White told Yahoo! Sports via text message. "It isn't done yet, though."

Silva said in the cage after the fight that he wasn't interested in fighting for a title again, and reiterated that stance at the post-fight news conference.

But he's apparently had a change of heart in the last several days and is at least open to the possibility of meeting Weidman a second time.

Silva was stopped at 1:18 of the second round when, after putting his hands at his side and taunting Weidman to hit him, he was clipped on the chin by a massive left hook and went down.

But that is also its weakness from a marketer?s point of view. It means someone can supply a name and email address, get the free offer and then unsubscribe. Marketers know they are going to lose a percentage this way, but they are interested in the ones that stay, because they are the real prospects.

If you are not building an email list to contact more prospects, I urge you to start now, and make it a priority. Don?t make the mistake I did in the early years and let hundreds of prospects slip away because I did not build a list.

Xcel Energy moves to 'translate' military work to civilian jobs

WASHINGTON ? Private employers and armed forces members need to bridge a gap between military and civilian job descriptions to boost veterans? employment, Xcel Energy Inc. CEO Ben Fowke told a congressional committee Wednesday.

The leader of the Minnesota-based utility giant wants to use veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to help address significant worker turnover Xcel expects in the next decade.

But to do so, Fowke told the Senate and House Joint Economic Committee, veterans must learn to explain how their military experience equates to jobs such as ?linesmen and women, plant operation and maintenance workers and engineers.?

Those are all jobs that Xcel would like to fill with military veterans in the coming years as its aging workforce retires, Fowke explained at a hearing focused on finding ways to drive down unemployment among those who have left the military since the 2001 terrorist attacks.

In 2012, veterans who left the military since the attacks had an unemployment rate of 9.9 percent, compared with 7 percent for veterans generally and the national unemployment rate of 8.1 percent. In Minnesota, post-9/11 vets had an unemployment rate of 14.1 percent in 2012, compared with 6.8 percent for veterans overall and a state unemployment rate of 5.6 percent.

While the 2012 unemployment figures are down for recent veterans, committee co-chairwoman Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., said they need to go lower. Klobuchar and Rep. Erik Paulsen, R-Minn., oversaw Wednesday?s hearing, which focused on ways to translate military experience into civilian skill sets.

?The military has a job title, a job classification, which may not intuitively translate to ?That?s an electrician,??? Fowke said in an interview. ?We?re trying to encourage both sides to take the extra step and realize, ?That skill is just like this skill.???

A key gap in hiring veterans, he testified, ?has been the ability to translate military skills to civilian job requirements, with the veteran unable to articulate his or her experience ... and our hiring leader unable to recognize the military experience they have and how it is comparable to the work we do.?

Fowke said 12 percent of Xcel?s 11,000 employees are military veterans, but most are older. As the company searches for veterans in the 25-35 age group, it will need better coordination with members of the military. So Xcel has developed a ?translator? on its website to try to link military experience to the company?s current job openings.

Fowke also pushed for armed forces members to take basic aptitude tests before they separate from the military so that prospective employers can decide how ? or if ? soon-to-be veterans fit into civilian hiring plans.

He called for partnerships between companies, the military and veterans? groups similar to a program Xcel runs with St. Cloud State University ?helping the students relate their experience to our job openings.?

Early intervention was a theme common to all speakers at the hearing, as well as the politicians running it. Klobuchar and Paulsen both pointed to a Minnesota National Guard unit that cut its unemployment rate significantly by beginning its civilian job transition program while still deployed in Kuwait.

Besides starting early, ?it would be helpful if military training could lead directly to civilian certifications [of job skills],? Fowke said.

Klobuchar said she has tried to help with proposed legislation to make paramedic training received by military members count toward civilian paramedic certification so that veterans can reduce their time in training.

Whether specific testing for civilian certifications can be built into military service is unclear. Fowke said attempts to engage active-duty military personnel in civilian job planning can be a logistical problem.

Paulsen commended Xcel for implementing ?best practices? in hiring veterans that other companies could adopt.

Like Xcel, many U.S. companies have developed hiring programs aimed at military veterans. But timing is critical, experts say, because the longer a veteran is unemployed, the more difficult it is to bring him or her into the workforce.

Representatives of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Texas Veterans Commission who spoke at Wednesday?s hearing called for information-sharing between the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs that currently does not exist.

The lack of communication sometimes keeps military-to-civilian transition programs from knowing when service members plan to leave the military.
