Diplomat: Texas agents should have seen people

(AP) ? Texas law enforcement agents were close enough to a pickup truck to see it was carrying people, not drugs, before one opened fire, killing two Guatemalan immigrants, a diplomat said Tuesday.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials have said the helicopter crew believed the truck was carrying a drug load and they shot to stop it.

But after interviewing seven surviving illegal immigrants, Alba Caceres, Guatemala's consul in McAllen, said there was agreement that the helicopter was 450 to 600 feet away when a trooper inside fired in an attempt to disable the fleeing vehicle. She said the trooper should have been able to see the people inside.

"They all saw it (the helicopter)," Caceres said. "All of them, including those riding up front because they were stuck against the window."

Along with the driver, four passengers were riding in the cab ? three of them crammed behind the front seat, she said. The other six passengers, including the two who were killed, were in the truck's bed, covered with a sheet.

Caceres had said Monday that her skepticism was building that a helicopter could fire on a vehicle without seeing people stuffed into the cabin and bed. "Neither you nor I believe it," she said.

A DPS spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Jose Leonardo Coj Cumar, 32, and Marcos Antonio Castro Estrada, 29, were killed. Coj was a father of three who was traveling to the United States because his eldest son needed surgery to repair an arm injured cutting fire wood, Caceres said. Castro was a father of two whose wife is three months pregnant. Both men were from San Martin Jilotepeque, about an hour outside of the Guatemalan capital.

Caceres was awaiting death certificates that would allow the bodies to be taken back to Guatemala.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens spotted the truck Thursday near La Joya and called for help when the driver wouldn't stop. The DPS helicopter responded and joined the chase.

DPS has said the crew believed the truck was carrying a load of drugs when the trooper tried to disable it by shooting out a tire on a rural, gravel road.

Caceres has made a formal request for an investigation. The Texas Rangers, an arm of DPS that often assists other agencies in officer-involved shootings, is leading the probe.

DPS has said the troopers suspected the pickup was carrying a "typical covered drug load," and the driver was going at reckless speeds. Agency regulations say troopers are allowed to use force when defending themselves or someone else from serious harm or death. Shooting at vehicles is justified to disable a vehicle or when deadly force is deemed necessary.

The Rio Grande Valley Equal Voice Network, a group of community-based organizations, has scheduled a Thursday news conference and prayer vigil at the site of the shooting.

The immigrants' families also have been concerned because they took out high-interest loans from someone in their community to pay the smugglers and it will be difficult to pay that money back now that their relatives are in U.S. custody rather than working in the U.S., Caceres said.

The loans ranged from $2,500 to more than $6,000 at interest rates of 9 percent to 10 percent per month, she said.

"You always expect that a coyote (smuggler) will abandon you," Caceres said. "You expect that organized crime will kidnap you. You expect that common criminals will assault you. But you would never expect that a United States authority would take your life."

Connie's Coffee Talk ? Paid Surveys Scam - Guidelines For ...

If you maintain up on net scandals, I am sure you?ve heard a lot about the paid surveys scam that has been going around. Lately, a ton of websites have popped up and began claiming to make you wealthy by filling out surveys on the web and a lot of, many men and women have been taken advantage of. The way it operates with these scamming websites is straightforward: they promise to give you access to as several paid surveys as you can stomach taking in exchange for your credit card numbers and a monthly membership fee. When you join and start off attempting to take the surveys, you locate out that only a extremely limited quantity of individuals can take each and every a single. Typically, the survey lists are all outdated and have reached their capacity. Also, the web sites don?t make it as clear as they really should that businesses are only interested in the opinions of certain demographics, and if you don?t fit into the category they?re seeking for you aren?t even eligible to take the surveys and get paid.
appstar financial scam
Naturally, the paid surveys scam internet sites have really carried out a number on the sector. Men and women are turned off from the whole notion, when they shouldn?t necessarily be. There are nonetheless a couple of very good, honorable websites out there that men and women can make a lot of money off of. I?ve observed them all and have narrowed down the list of great ones to just a handful.
appstar financial complaint
These resources I came up with are absolutely not paid surveys scam websites. They are very truthful about what you can realistically count on to get out of joining. There?s even an revenue calculator that you can use to discover out how huge your paychecks will be, based on how considerably time you happen to be prepared to place in. In addition to just surveys, these internet sites even offer you concentrate groups you can participate in and gives particulars on how to get paid to drive your vehicle around town.

YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA Solid State Survivor music review by ...

4 stars The ratings of YMO albums are all over the map on this website and I feel it really misrepresents them. The truth is that their *main* albums (the s/t, this one, BGM, Technodelic, and Naughty Boys) run very close in quality. I agree though that if you're a prog guy this is probably not the album for you. This is where their Kraftwerk influence is perhaps the most felt but it's really just a celebration of technology, or the promise of a "future Japan". Like the first album most of these sounds (which are commonplace today) must have blown some heads in their day. Most of this is light and very catchy but the darker tracks really do reveal a sophistication in their work. You can't put brilliant minds like this together without getting something like that. But poppier moments like "Rydeen", "Technopolis", "Behind the Mask" (ESPECIALLY "Behind the Mask" - has a greater technopop song ever been written?) and that incredible chorus in "Absolute Ego Dance" (where the vocoder comes in) are what it's all about. And if you can't tolerate an ass-backwards cover of "Day Tripper", I don't know what to tell you. Really I'd give this 4.5 stars but I was told by the rules to use 5 stars sparingly so I'm gonna save it for BGM.

Sandoval's big night propels Giants

SF slugger ties record with 3 HRs ? 2 off Verlander ? in 8-3 win vs. Detroit

San Francisco slugger Pablo Sandoval celebrates after hitting his third home run in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday in San Francisco.

updated 12:26 a.m. ET Oct. 25, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO - With three mighty swings, Pablo Sandoval put the San Francisco Giants ahead in this World Series and put himself in a class with Mr. October.

Sandoval hit three home runs and joined Reggie Jackson, Babe Ruth and Albert Pujols as the only sluggers to do it in the Series, and the Giants jolted Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers 8-3 on Wednesday night in Game 1.

A rollicking AT&T Park crowd ? a sea of black and orange outfits ? roared as Sandoval connected in his first three at-bats. Popular in the Bay Area as the Kung Fu Panda for his roly-poly shape, he went 4 for 4 and drove in four runs. A Giant panda for sure.

From start to finish, it was basically a perfect game by the Giants. Coming off a Game 7 win over St. Louis on Monday night, they looked totally fresh.

"We played our last game only two days ago," Sandoval said. "We're still hot. We just came here and played our game."

Verlander, the reigning Cy Young winner so dominant in this postseason, looked uncomfortable from the get-go and constantly pawed at the mound.

As fans filed out singing along with Tony Bennett's standard "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," the final score raised a nagging question for manager Jim Leyland and his favored Tigers: Did too much rest after a playoff sweep of the Yankees mean too much rust?

Tagged by Sandoval for a solo shot in the first inning, Verlander could only mouth 'Wow!' when the Giants star launched a two-run drive in the third that set off another blast of fog horns. Sandoval reprised his power show from this year's All-Star game, when his bases-loaded triple highlighted a five-run first inning against Verlander.

And if there was any doubt that Verlander was shaky, the best sign came in the fourth. That's when pitcher Barry Zito, a career .099 hitter, sliced an RBI single with two outs off the current AL MVP for a 5-0 lead.

The festive crowd stood and applauded when it was announced that Verlander was being pulled for a pinch hitter in the fifth. Sandoval gave them another reason to get up moments later when he hit a solo homer off reliever Al Alburquerque in the fifth, answering the cheers by waving his batting helmet in a curtain call.

The Tigers seemed out of sorts in their first game following a five-day layoff. That was an issue in 2006, too, when Verlander and his teammates had nearly a week off before getting wiped out by the Cardinals.

"I'm one that's been around long enough to know that a lot of things happen in this game. This was a big-hyped game with Justin, probably a lot of pressure on him," Leyland said.

"But I don't think it had anything to do with the pressure. His fastball command was not good. He got out of sync. He got on fast forward. He just did not pitch well tonight. It's that simple," he said.

Pujols homered three times last year, Jackson accomplished the feat in 1977 and Ruth did it in 1926 and again in 1928.

For good measure, Sandoval lined a single his last time up. He donated the bat he used for the first two homers to the Hall of Fame ? no need for it anymore, he broke on the backswing of his second shot.

Sandoval is one of a record nine Venezuelans on the Series rosters, and his power performance attracted attention way beyond the ballpark.

"There goes the third! Pablo makes history," Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez tweeted in Spanish.

Left off the 2010 World Series roster by the champion Giants, Zito shut out the Tigers until Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera hit an RBI single in the sixth. The Giants won for the 14th straight time with Zito starting.

"Just the opportunity alone was mind-blowing. Me and my wife were dancing around when I heard," Zito said of getting the Game 1 start. "And then the boys came out swinging and played great defense."

NL championship series MVP Marco Scutaro hit RBI singles after doubles by Angel Pagan. NL batting champion Buster Posey contributed two hits, left fielder Gregor Blanco made diving catches to rob Cabrera and Prince Fielder, and Tim Lincecum came out of the bullpen to prevent further damage.

Game 2 is Thursday night, with Doug Fister starting for the Tigers against Madison Bumgarner.

The Giants kept getting good bounces, with Pagan hitting a double that hopped off the third-base bag. ALCS MVP Delmon Young, meanwhile, failed to run after a tapper in front of the plate that the Giants turned into a double play.

Pitching in San Francisco for the first time since 2008, Verlander scuffed at the rubber while warming up for the first inning, pulled off his glove after badly overthrowing a curve and kept taking deep breaths. He hardly resembled the guy who was 3-0 with an 0.74 ERA in three playoff starts this year.

Ever since two poor outings in the 2006 Series against St. Louis ? punctuated by two throwing errors ? Verlander has worked hard to harness his emotions and 100 mph heat in the early going.

Verlander was trying to settle in when Sandoval tagged him, pouncing on an 0-2 fastball and lining it into the front row over the center-field wall. Quite a start for the team that finished last in the majors in home runs.

Get this: It was the first three-homer game at the stadium originally known as Pac Bell Park since the very first one, when Kevin Elster did it for the Dodgers in 2000. Nope, not even home run king Barry Bonds had done this.

It was certainly a moment of retribution of Sandoval. He was benched during the 2010 World Series, his production and confidence down, his weight up. In the stands on this night, fans wearing furry panda hats celebrated with him.

Verlander got into trouble again the third, and pitching coach Jeff Jones strolled to the mound when the count went to 2-0 on Sandoval. Verlander stared at Jones and shook his head. On the next pitch, Verlander could do little but watch the ball sail into the front row in left.

To some, this looked somewhat similar to the 2010 Series opener. That day, the Giants beat up the supposedly unhittable Cliff Lee on their way to a five-game romp over Texas.

This is how bad it got for the Tigers: Former closer Jose Valverde made his first appearance in 11 days. Leyland still isn't sure what he'll get from the struggling reliever.

Lincecum, meanwhile, retired seven straight batters and struck out five of them. The two-time Cy Young winner has embraced his new role in the bullpen.

Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer for the Tigers in the ninth off mop-up reliever George Kontos.

NOTES: Tampa Bay's Desmond Jennings was the only other player this year to homer twice in a game off Verlander. ... Willie Mays and fellow Giants Hall of Famers Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda and Gaylord Perry took part in the first-ball ceremony. ... Tigers great Al Kaline, now a team executive, watched Detroit take batting practice from behind the cage. ... The Game 1 winner has won eight of the last nine championships. ... Cabrera and Posey marked the first set of batting champs to face each other in the World Series since 1954 when it was Mays of the New York Giants and Bobby Avila of Cleveland. When Cabrera walked on a close full-count pitch, he playfully patted the Giants' All-Star catcher on his way to first base. ... Tigers bullpen catcher Jeff Kunkel wandered the stands well before the teams took the field for warmups, snapping pictures of the stadium and field with his cell phone. ... The Giants franchise played its 106th Series game, trailing only the Yankees (225) and Cardinals (112). The Dodgers are fourth with 105.

DNP Apple adds Rubles and other currencies to app store, bumps minimum price to 089 in Europe

After announcing slightly under par financials, Apple has added more ways it can be paid for apps, though it also bumped the minimum freight to get one across Europe. The new lowest price users in France, Germany, Italy and other nations "over there" can pay for an app is now €0.89, a euro-dime bump from before -- apparently due to the weak euro and local tax hikes. On the other hand, Cupertino also added more currencies accepted at its store: South African Rand, Turkish Lira, Russian Rubles, Indian Rupees, Isreali New Shekel's, Saudi Arabian Riyal, Indonesian Rupish and UAE Dirham can all now be used to pay. Apple has tinkered with its prices before in varying amounts overseas depending on the nation, so you may want to check your own country's App Store for the news -- bad or good.

5 Positive Steps During Down Sales Cycles | SCORE Small ...

Some businesses are naturally cyclical, such as summer camps or ski shops. Others may have boom or bust times depending on the industry or the activity of key customers. The good thing about slow sales seasons is you have the time to focus on those ?important but not urgent? tasks. Here are five activities that set up your business for future growth times:

  1. Analyze past performance. Look over sales and proposals (wins and losses). What went well? What flopped? What could have been improved? What products are selling well? Which need to be phased out? What marketing tactics produced results? (If you can?t answer these questions, look at step 5.)
  2. Set up simple, visual goals. Where do you want to be? Whittle down your vision to 3-5 SMART goals (specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, timely) and then post them in a place where you and your team can keep them in sight.
  3. Set up lead generation engines. Set up an editorial calendar for the year with topics for blog posts/articles, e-newsletters and social media posts. Include in your calendar key promotions, industry events, etc. much of this content can be written in advance and scheduled. You then know you will be capturing and nurturing leads, even in the busy months.
  4. Cultivate key relationships. Set up one-to-one meetings (even via Skype) with key influencers, distributors, media, suppliers ? key people that can really help grow your business.
  5. Put in gauges and metrics. No business knows what lies ahead on the road; but successful businesses set up gauges so to steer their businesses away from potholes and toward opportunities. Key metrics for any business: monthly leads, conversion rates and profitability by sale.

What activities do you focus on during slow times? Share in the Comments section below.

(AP) ? Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi has issued a decree pardoning all those arrested or convicted of crimes linked to actions "in support of the revolution" since the beginning of the popular uprising that forced his predecessor, Hosni Mubarak, from power.

The order asks the prosecutor general and the military prosecutor to prepare a list of names of all those who may benefit from the pardon within a month from the decree's issuance.

The decree does not specify who would be pardoned. But it could potentially affect the more than 1,000 protesters who were arrested during the demonstrations against Mubarak or in those against the military council that ruled from his fall until Morsi was sworn in on June 30.
