In 2013, watch zombies, Superman, 3-D 'Gatsby'

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

As the calendar rolls over to 2013, moviegoers have a whole new slate of films coming to theaters. There are some powerhouse titles coming our way, including superhero flicks such as "Man of Steel" and "Iron Man 3" and second films in both the "Hunger Games" and "Hobbit" series. We can't include all the blockbusters here, but have chosen 10 titles to watch for.

Warner Bros, Disney, Universal

"The Great Gatsby," "Oz the Great and Powerful," "Despicable Me 2" and "Man of Steel" are all among the films coming our way in 2013.

Oscar's calling
It's not for everyone, and yes, it features disturbing torture scenes, but "Zero Dark Thirty," Kathryn Bigelow's film about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, is many critics' choice to win the best-picture Oscar this year. The last hour of the film, where SEALs swarm the Pakistan compound looking for the terrorist leader, is glued-to-your-seat suspenseful, even though we all know what happened. (Jan. 4 in most markets, already open in NY and LA.)

Yippee ki-yay, Mother Russia
"A Good Day to Die Hard" might be great, it might be terrible, but Bruce Willis' John McClane is one of the most-beloved action heroes of all time, so you can bet there will be lines to see it. It's set in Moscow, and Aussie actor Jai Courtney plays McClane's estranged son. And it opens on Valentine's Day, so great date-night fodder! (Feb. 14.)

Back over the rainbow
Before Dorothy and Toto ever showed up, things were swirling in the merry old land of Oz. Sam Raimi's "Oz the Great and Powerful" takes a look at how the wizard and the witches got their start. (March 8.)

Gatsby believed in the green 3-D light
May is a jam-packed month for big blockbusters in 2013, with "Iron Man 3," "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Hangover Part III" among the new releases scheduled. But our top pick is "The Great Gatsby," with Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as his beloved Daisy, and Tobey Maguire, DiCaprio's real-life good pal, as Gatsby's friend Nick. We still don't get why it's in 3-D. (May 10.)

Monsters get schooled
"Monsters Inc.," in which cute monsters Mike and Sulley reveal that they're just as scared of kids as the kids are of them, was a hit for Pixar in 2001. Prequel "Monsters University" shows how the monsters meet, at monster college, where they're frat-boy rivals who become friends. (June 21)?

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a reboot
Superman is a great hero, but he can be a bit boring, all clean-cut and square-jawed. Hollywood will reboot the character in "Man of Steel," with "Tudors" star Henry Cavill playing Supes, Amy Adams as love interest Lois Lane, and Michael Shannon as villain General Zod. (June 14.)

Haven't had enough zombies? Good!
"World War Z" is based on Max Brooks' excellent book, which compiles fictional interviews with folks all over the world who tell of their experiences with a decade-long zombie apocalypse. Brad Pitt plays the U.N. employee who travels the world interviewing survivors and trying to get things under control. (June 21.)

All hail minions
"Despicable Me" was underrated when it was released in 2010. The characters were funny-looking and unfamiliar, and it wasn't from Pixar. But that film holds up, and now "Despicable Me 2" is on the way, with Steve Carell returning as villain-turned-daddy-figure Gru, Al Pacino as his new nemesis, and a million yellow pill-shaped minions hopping around speaking their own patented gibberish. (July 3.)

Start your engines
Even if you don't know F-all about F1 (Formula One racing, that is), the sport sure gets some great movies made about it. ?The 2010 documentary "Senna," about handsome doomed driver Ayrton Senna, was one of the best films of that year. And now comes "Rush," Ron Howard's film about the 1976 rivalry between drivers Niki Lauda and James Hunt, and Lauda's recovery from the fiery crash that nearly killed him, and has scarred his face to this day. (Sept. 20)

Supercalifragilisticexpila...well, you know the rest
What's that you say? Tom Hanks starring as Walt Disney? Emma Thompson as "Mary Poppins" author P.L. Travers? It won't take a spoonful of sugar for us to line up for "Saving Mr. Banks," which tells the story of how the beloved flying nanny came to the big screen. ?(Dec. 20.)

Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez: The Rematch Will Outdo the First Fight

The rematch between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez will go down in the main event of UFC 155.? It may be one of the most talked-about rematches in recent memory, given how their first meeting ended.

Velasquez and dos Santos met one another on the first-ever UFC card on the Fox network in Nov. of 2011. After a 30-minute pre-match lead-in, fans were hoping for an epic battle between two of the best heavyweights on the planet.

Instead, the end came swiftly, just 64 seconds into the contest.

Velasquez didn't quite look like himself, and the knee injury he had coming in likely played some part in his performance. But he also looked very tentative as well, something we hadn't seen from a guy who likes to push the pace, given his conditioning advantage over most heavyweights.

Dos Santos, to his own credit, fought with a damaged knee as well. He was able to land an overhand right to end the fight and capitalize on the opening for the finish.

Now both men will meet one another Saturday night to decide the future of the heavyweight division. Will the rematch play out in similar fashion?

Luckily, there's hope for a better fight the second time around.

For one, just as in team sports, it's very hard to dominate an opponent a second time. Both men have learned what to do and what not to do coming into the rematch. Training for months on end for the same opponent no doubt makes each man an expert on the other.

Another reason the rematch should outdo the first is Velasquez.

The former champion seems to have a different mindset coming into the rematch. Listening to him in the pre-fight interviews, Velasquez seems to realize he needs to be more aggressive and not wait for the champion to make the first move. As a popular saying in professional wrestling goes, "The challenger needs to beat the champion, a champion doesn't need to beat his challenger."

Velasquez knows he needs to come out and take the title from dos Santos, which should lead to some explosive striking exchanges. Or even better, Velasquez may get a takedown and make the champion fight off his back, something we've yet to see from dos Santos thus far in his UFC career.

With so many variables coming in, the rematch is bound to create just as much?if not more?anticipation for how the fight will play out. And, of course, greater anticipation creates greater interest in the fight.

It's very rare that a rematch ends in similar fashion as the first meeting, but given JDS' punching power, that could be a real possibility. Still, Velasquez seems to be focused on getting his belt back and won't go down without a fight this time.

Pinstripe Bowl Notebook: Will Syracuse coach Doug Marrone bolt to NFL?

NEW YORK ? Will he stay or will he go?

That?s the question: It?s understandable that the last item on Doug Marrone?s mind after guiding the Orange to two bowl wins in three years and an eight-victory season by winning six of the final seven games, is his immediate future employment opportunities.

Marrone?s name has come up time and again since November as a candidate to fill NFL head coaching vacancies this off-season, his job performance praised in turning around the Orange program, combined with his offensive coordinator experience with the New Orleans Saints.

pinstripebowl

Is Marrone leaving for the NFL?

We asked the fourth-year SU boss afterwards about his name being linked to expected openings and his smile quickly disappeared.

?I just want to enjoy this victory,? he said before departing back inside the victorious ?Cuse locker room.

? Related: Syracuse defeats West Virginia in Pinstripe Bowl

The Orange was blue away from home

The Big East was the home team in alternating years with the Big XIII, so Syracuse wore its home blue jersey in the Pinstripe Bowl win against West Virginia.

It was the second time this season (USC loss at MetLife Stadium in a SU home game) that the Orange wore blue outside of the Dome, and it?s the first season since the inaugural Pinstripe Bowl in 2010 when the ?Cuse edged Kansas State wearing blue.

In the Carrier Dome era Syracuse has rarely worn blue outside of the Teflon Top; only five other times:

  • 1988-Hall of Fame Bowl vs. LSU at Tampa (W)
  • 1990-Kickoff Classic vs. USC at N.J. Meadowlands (L)
  • 1996-Liberty Bowl vs. Houston at Memphis (W)
  • 1999-Orange Bowl vs. Florida at Miami (L)
  • 2001-Kickoff Classic vs. Georgia Tech at N.J. Meadowlands (L)

Record in blue including the WVU bowl game is now 4-4.

Speaking of uniforms, word is Syracuse will have an alternate look(s) to choose from designer Nike for next season?s ACC debut, beginning with the ?13 season opener Aug. 31 at MetLife Stadium against Penn State.

This is a three-game series; home (2021), away (2020), neutral site (2013). For next season?s neutral site matchup, don?t be surprised to see the Orange in orange tops and the Nittany Lions in blue jerseys.

Cantor gives high marks to Gross, Marrone

The chancellor likes what she sees with Orange athletics: As she watched athletic director Daryl Gross and his WVU counterpart Oliver Luck (father of Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew) along with Yankee executives Randy Levine and Lon Trost meet the media prior to the game, Nancy Cantor couldn?t help but exude Orange spirit.

The New York native in her second-to-last year guiding the university, Cantor marveled at the turnaround of the football program under Doug Marrone, but more important to her is the 12th place standing of all of the university?s programs in the latest ranking of the Capital One Cup.

?You know what?s been so wonderful to watch is how across the board (Daryl) has hired extraordinary coaches and it?s really made a difference,? Cantor said approvingly. It really feels good to see a whole program rise in the Capital One Cup that way, it?s amazing.?

Syracuse finished with its highest ever point total in the Capital One Cup for the fall, finishing 12th nationally, and that will rise a little bit with the bowl win over West Virginia.

Intel, Microsoft face the Eva Glass of Destruction in 2013

Intel, Microsoft face the Eva Glass of Destruction in 2013 -

Destiny deals cards but while it sometimes deals Aces in the poker game of technology, in the case of both Intel and Microsoft the year 2012 has really been a horrible year for the Great Satan of Chips and the Great Satan of Software, respectively. The Ace of Spades, it comes to mind.

At CES 2012, Intel had nothing to say to TechEye. Amidst the jingling and the jangling the best it could come up with was automotive stuff ? that is to say cars.? Ultrabooks in 2012 started with a whimper and ended with a whimper and a snivel.

Microsoft had little to say at CeBIT 2012 in March ? we snuck into its press conference in the Messe and it told tales of Windows 8, fantastic chimaeric tales where its famous ?interface? could bridge two, three or even four dimensions. But it lacked the famous ?apps?.

At Computex 2012 we gazed in awe as the dancing girls tried to ramp up the volume on both bothies (that?s Scottish for booths) to persuade the world+dog that this really was a great thing.? You chatted to the guys and guyettes at the sharp end of life ? the Asusteks of this world ? and you realised PDQ (pretty damn quickly) that Taiwan felt that both Microsoft and Intel had overplayed their cards.

Somehow, without meaning to, we made it to IDF 2012 ? a forlorn backyard depopulated by people who didn?t want Microsoft and Intel?s money any more.? The whole world+dog had moved on to tablets and jerky attempts by the Great Trinity of the X86 world ? oh yeah AMD compris ? met with bellylaughs.

To lose one executive is natural. To lose two is unnatural. But to lose three is to lose.? Sean Maloney departs for pastures new at the end of January 2013 ? he will be sorely missed, because actually he is quite effective.? Paul ?don?t cry for me? Otellini will leave Intel in May 2013, is part of the very famous INTC succession plan.

While the internally blinkered worlds of INTC and MSFT continue, the outside world has changed radically.? Ultrabooks are way too expensive. Microsoft Tablets are risible if you?re talking hard cash. Intel and Microsoft have lost their way. Atoms are smashed by other wannabes.

IntelIntel can probably make a mint out of healthcare and Microsoft can possibly make a mint out of servers for a while. But the grand behemoths have fallen, in all certainty.? No one in their right mind would buy an Ultrabook nor would a sane person buy an overpriced tablet too.

The goliaths have been slain by the small guys, but because no-one likes change, it is hard for the giants to realise this, even though the stone has finally hit their foreheads. Giants take time to fall, like empires. The X86 is dead. Long live convergence and the small guys.

Here shown is a CD Intel gave me at an IDF in 2000. Note well the apostrophe between PC and s. It is non-grammatical. The contents are risible, too...

Bharti Infratel shares drop 13 percent in market debut

NEW DELHI/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Bharti Infratel, backed by billionaire Sunil Mittal, dived 13 percent in its trading debut after raising about $760 million in India's biggest IPO in two years, weighed down by a cautious outlook for mobile tower operators.

The IPO, priced near the lower end of an indicative range to ensure success, struggled to find interest from retail investors and was supported mostly by overseas institutional buyers, a key pillar in the Indian stock market.

Bharti Infratel's poor trading debut is unlikely to deter future offerings in India, bankers said, with strong foreign fund bids expected to underpin the share market.

"It's early days and the stock should settle in the course of the next day or two. If the foreign flows continue, the market will remain buoyant which should translate into more deals," a person familiar with the Bharti Infratel IPO said. "If not IPOs, there should be more follow-on offerings."

Already, privately owned Axis Bank Ltd has announced plans to raise fresh equity capital, and the source said a possible listing of National Stock Exchange is among the other IPOs that investors can expect.

Bharti Infratel's listing follows a tepid first half in IPO deals, and is the biggest after state-run Coal India's $3.5 billion issue in 2010.

The listing pushed India's IPO volume to $1.28 billion this year, shy of last year's $1.36 billion, according to Thomson Reuters data. But that is still short of the record set in 2007 when Indian corporates raised $8.65 billion through IPOs.

IPO volumes are expected to improve further on rising foreign capital inflows. Several high-profile deals including the potential IPO of Vodafone Group Plc's India unit are likely to hit as earlier as next year, bankers said.

Including follow-on share offers, share sales volumes in India jumped 70 percent from a year earlier to $14.8 billion, according to Thomson Reuters data.

The market will likely remain busy in 2013 with two large share sales in state-run Oil India Ltd and NTPC Ltd set to come in the next few weeks as part of the government's plan to raise around $5.5 billion by exiting part of its stakes across a slew of companies.

"The quality of companies do matter a lot. Investors are latching on to good quality names or where corporate governance and business risks are far lower," said Dhananjay Sinha, the Mumbai-based co-head of institutional research at Emkay Global Financial Services.

Bharti Infratel, a unit of top Indian mobile phone carrier Bharti Airtel Ltd and partly owned by KKR & Co Ltd , closed at 191.65 rupees, having fallen as much as 14.3 percent during trade on the National Stock Exchange.

Bharti Infratel had issued shares at 220 rupees to funds and wealthy investors, who received the majority of the allocation. The company sold shares to retail investors at 210 rupees and to cornerstone investors at 230 rupees.

The broader Nifty, which has surged about 28 percent this year and is Asia's third best-performing market, ended 0.65 percent higher.

POOR SHOWING

Bharti Infratel's share performance was poor compared with the surge in shares of Credit Analysis and Research Ltd and PC Jeweller Ltd, both of which made their market debut this week after raising around $100 million each.

Weighing on the outlook for mobile tower operators, an Indian court this year revoked permits of several wireless carriers while demand growth for third and fourth-generation mobile data services slowed.

"The business of towers is under stress," said K.K. Mital, a portfolio manager at Globe Capital in New Delhi. "This is a business with a long gestation period and also not something retail and HNIs (high net worth investors) easily understand."

Shares of GTL Infrastructure Ltd , the only other mobile tower operator listed in India, have slumped 90 percent in the last two years, hit by debt repayment worries.

Bharti Infratel priced its IPO at lower valuations to overcome those concerns, and managed to attract more than a dozen cornerstone investors including units of Morgan Stanley and Citigroup Inc .

Bharti Infratel sold about 146 million new shares, or more than three quarters of the shares on offer, while four of its private equity investors, including Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings and the private equity arm of Goldman Sachs Group Inc , sold a total of 42 million shares as they cashed out of some of their early investments.

The selling price was at a steep discount to the $1 billion that seven funds including Temasek and Goldman arm had paid in 2007 for a combined 9 percent stake in Bharti Infratel. KKR separately invested $250 million in 2008, but its exact holding is not known.

Bharti Airtel, which owned 86 percent of the tower operator before the IPO, did not sell any shares in the process.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays Plc, Deutsche Bank AG, HSBC Holdings Plc, JPMorgan Chase & Co, Standard Chartered Plc and UBS AG were the foreign banks underwriting the IPO.

Kotak Mahindra Bank and Enam Securities were the domestic banks handling the share sale.

Bharti Infratel has about 34,000 towers and owns 42 percent of Indus Towers, the world's largest tower operator. Along with Indus, Bharti Infratel has a 38 percent share of the Indian telecommunications tower market.

PFT: Foster cleared by doctors, returns to practice

San Francisco 49ers v Seattle SeahawksGetty Images

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman continues to wait for the ruling on his appeal of a four-game suspension for a violation of the league?s performance-enhancing drug policy.

It?s been over a month since it was first reported that Sherman and teammate Brandon Browner were facing suspensions for testing positive for a banned substance. Browner dropped his appeal and will be eligible to return for the playoffs, but Sherman has continued to fight his positive test.

Even if the decision (expected on Thursday) goes against Sherman and he is suspended by the league, he plans on continuing his fight. Sherman said Wednesday that he will continue to explore other legal options and could ultimately end up suing the league.

?I can?t get back playing regardless. I can just sue the league, and that?s probably what I?m going to do if they suspend me,?? Sherman said.

Adam Schefter of ESPN has reported that Sherman?s appeal was based around a supposed break in procedure in the collection process. The cup used to collect Sherman?s urine sample was apparently broken, requiring a second cup to be placed underneath to prevent leakage. The seal on the second cup was also broken.

Sherman tweeted on Christmas some more thoughts on the basis of his appeal to the league.

?Hoping we play in a just League @nfl. Not a league that allows a tester to mix urine samples. A tester with a history of errors. Has has had to have 6 other tests thrown out and he has only been testing 6months,? he tweeted.

Sherman was also asked Wednesday about his thoughts on how the appeal has played out to this point.

?It?s been pretty standard other than the league telling you they can break rules,? Sherman said. ?They don?t care if you took it or you didn?t take it, if the sample is tainted or it isn?t tainted, they said it doesn?t matter. The collective bargaining, there?s policies, there?s rules in the policies that they said should not apply to them and they wrote them. That?s just how the league does things.?

With the track record of PED suspensions being overturned, it appears likely that Sherman will be suspended on Thursday. While he won?t have a recourse to get the four games back, Sherman appears adamant in continuing this fight in whatever fashion he has to.

If he?s suspended, Seattle could get Sherman back in time for the Super Bowl if they play in the first round of the playoffs. If they manage to backdoor into the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye with San Francisco and Green Bay losses this weekend, Sherman?s season would be over.

MSR Online ? Encore careers: They're not just for seniors anymore

ChangingCoursesquareUpon entering my 40th year, I decided that I needed a mid-life career change. I knew that it would be something drastically different from the course that I had embarked on in 1988 as a bright-eyed, newly graduated genetics student. My growing concern for the economic advancement of women, workforce development, and a desire to be my own boss urged me to move in a new and different direction.

While working in a corporate setting for 22 years, I went back to school and obtained a master?s degree in human resource development. For years, I did pro bono work to gain experience. I launched my first consulting practice in 2004.

Today, I provide human resource development consulting to individuals and nonprofit organizations. I am having the time of my life, and this is truly what many people refer to as an ?encore career.?

What is an ?encore career??

After career transitions, retirement, life changes, etc., you may find yourself having to regroup and start over again. Depending on your age and financial status, you may not be able to retire in the traditional sense and collect benefits or a pension. Many people find that they just aren?t ready to stop contributing as part of the American workforce.

A growing trend is to use your authentic vocation or passion to meet a need and get paid for it. These are also called ?encore careers.? We often think of retirees as having the time and freedom to do what they love, but younger boomers (45-55) are finding encore careers to be very fulfilling and lucrative.

According to Wikipedia, an encore career is work in the second half of life that combines continued income, greater personal meaning, and social impact. These jobs are paid positions, often in public interest fields such as education, the environment, health, the government sector, social services, and other nonprofits.

?

Getting started

Before you get started, make a list of skills and abilities that you possess. In particular, list items that you can turn into a business. Editing, dog walking, r?sum? writing, hairstyling and writing are a few businesses that can be started as home businesses. But remember, your clients will expect the same quality that your employer expected of you, with the addition of this special ingredient: great customer service! Customer service can make a business thrive or cause its demise.

If you choose to use your corporate experience to do good, let everyone know. Join associations and let key decision makers and influential people know that you are on the market and looking for a way to leave your legacy and leverage your corporate experience in a way that is satisfying to you.

olderworker

Tapping into the gray

Barry Bluestone, dean of the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Northeastern University, predicts that within the next eight years there could be at least five million potential job vacancies in the United States, nearly half of them (2.4 million) in social sector jobs in education, health care, government and nonprofit organizations. The loss in total output could limit the growth of needed services and cost the economy as much as $3 trillion over the five-year period beginning in 2018.

Bluestone?s analysis builds on the ?2008 MetLife Foundation/Civic Ventures Encore Career Survey? conducted by Peter D. Hart and Associates. This work shows that most people expect to work longer than previous generations, but that half of those aged 44 to 70 want encore careers. ?Not only will there be jobs for these experienced workers to fill,? Bluestone writes, ?but the nation will absolutely need older workers to step up and take them.?

?

Get ready, get ready, get ready!

As the stats suggest, things will change ? the economy, demand for experience which only seasoned workers can bring, value, interests, etc. But remember, time is of the essence for when you?re the boss and taking charge of your new career. If you are not ready to ?settle down,? then brush off your skills, show the world what you?ve got, and get busy! What are you waiting for?

Sorry @Vilefaith, I didn't have time to reply when he posted. His account has been in limbo for some time. Vile, sorry about stepping on your toes on this. I took some liberties of accepting membership applications for LoL regs. Killgore is one of the few that have been in our ts3 for some time. He's been active and friendly to the other regs. Good teamwork. I'm working on getting some members to be a recruitment admin for LoL.

I will try and post some recruiting acceptance messages soon. I had some register last night, and had them put their app in. Again they have been on our ts3 for a few months and have been working pretty well together.

Again I apologize for the confusion.

Christmas snow storm kills 3, tornadoes leave thousands in the South without power

A snow storm caused flights across the country to be cancelled. Three died, and many were injured in dangerous highway conditions and as trees fell on homes. In the South, tornadoes left 100,000 without power on Christmas Day.?

An enormous storm system that dumped snow and sleet on the nation's midsection and unleashed damaging tornadoes around the Deep South began punching its way toward the Northeast on Wednesday, slowing holiday travel.

Post-Christmas travelers braced for flight delays and a raft of weather warnings for drivers, a day after rare winter twisters damaged buildings in Louisiana and Alabama.

Snow and ice covered roads in southern Illinois and southern Indiana early Wednesday. Officials urged residents to stay home if they can. State police reported numerous slide-off accidents in the Evansville, Ind., area and white-out conditions on Interstate 64 in Indiana with wind gusts around 30 mph.

The storm system headed from the Gulf Coast to New England has been blamed for three deaths and several injuries, though no one was killed outright in the tornadoes. The storms also left more than 100,000 without power for a time across the South, darkening Christmas celebrations.

Severe thunderstorms were forecast for the Carolinas while a line of blizzard and winter storm warnings stretched from Arkansas up the Ohio River to New York and on to Maine.

Thirty-four tornadoes were reported in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama during the outbreak Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Rick Cauley's family was hosting relatives for Christmas when tornado sirens went off in Mobile. Not taking any chances, he and his wife, Ashley, hustled everyone down the block to take shelter at the athletic field house at Mobile's Murphy High School in Mobile.

It turns out, that wasn't the place to head.

"As luck would have it, that's where the tornado hit," Cauley said. "The pressure dropped and the ears started popping and it got crazy for a second." They were all fine, though the school was damaged, as were a church and several homes, but officials say no one was seriously injured.

Camera footage captured the approach of the large funnel cloud.

Mobile was the biggest city hit by numerous twisters. Along with brutal, straight-line winds, the storms knocked down countless trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark. Torrential rains drenched the region and several places saw flash flooding.

More than 325 flights around the U.S. were canceled as of Wednesday morning, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. The cancelations were mostly spread around airports that had been or soon would be in the path of the storm.

Holiday travelers in the nation's much colder midsection battled treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions from the same fast-moving storms. In Arkansas, highway department officials said the state was fortunate the snowstorm hit on Christmas Day when many travelers were already at their destinations.

Texas, meanwhile, dealt with high winds and slickened highways.

On Tuesday, winds toppled a tree onto a pickup truck in the Houston area, killing the driver, and a 53-year-old north Louisiana man was killed when a tree fell on his house. Icy roads already were blamed for a 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma, and the Highway Patrol there says a 28-year-old woman was killed in a crash on a snowy U.S. Highway near Fairview.

How to negotiate for anything ? Quartz

Negotiation is a universal art, but many of us are surprisingly bad at it, especially those raised in cultures in which bargaining is not the norm.?(I once participated in a panel on how to run a successful freelance business; at least half the audience confessed to almost never negotiating with their clients over rates.)

Even if you consider yourself an old hand at getting the best of your bargaining partner, I urge you to check out the Dec. 21 podcast of Planet Money. It?s about how to negotiate for things, especially when you?re Barack Obama and the US Congress and you?re trying to avert the fiscal cliff.?I?ve distilled the lessons contained in that episode, plus a few from the literature, below.

1. Know your BATNA

Across all negotiating strategies?and this is a vast field of academic inquiry?one universal requirement for winning is confidence. The easiest way to be confident in a negotiation is to not have to fake it, and that means knowing your ?best alternative to a negotiated agreement,? or BATNA.

In the fiscal cliff negotiation between Obama and conservatives in the US Congress, Obama?s BATNA is arguably better than the House Speaker John Boehner?s.?If negotiations break down and the US goes over the fiscal cliff, Obama gets the end to Bush-era tax cuts that he wanted, albeit for the middle class as well as for the rich. (Subsequently, he might be able to lower taxes on the middle class through legislation.) Whereas Boehner, according to polls, mostly just gets the blame.

When negotiating over a salary, your BATNA is whatever wage someone else is ready to pay you to do a similar job. That?s one reason that leveraging a competitor?s attempt to poach you is a tried-and-true method for getting a raise: that competitor?s offer is your BATNA in any renewed salary negotiation.

2. Expanding the pie

When negotiating, the human mind is automatically drawn to the point of contention, whether that?s the issue of new taxes or the price of an item. But that keeps both sides from realizing that there are other things that could be on the table, but aren?t. For example, when two companies are negotiating a licensing deal over intellectual property, one sweetener that is sometimes offered is a cross-licensing deal. In other words, instead of Apple simply paying Google for the right to use some of its patents, Apple might also offer the use of some of its own patents as part of the deal.

This negotiating technique is also known as ?integrative bargaining,? and it?s the basis of William Ury?s bestselling book Getting to Yes. (Ury co-founded Harvard University?s Program on Negotiation.) The idea is that if both parties lay out their needs in advance, rather than keeping information hidden from the other party, each side can seek to meet the needs of the other in a way that?s mutually beneficial.

3. The Nibble

In Planet Money?s podcast, one story stands out. Adam Galinsky, a professor at Columbia University who specializes in negotiations, was waiting for a flight home when the airline began offering vouchers to anyone who would take a flight the next day. After waiting for the value of the voucher to reach $1000 (Galinsky had paid $180 for his original ticket), he approached the airline?s ticketing agent.

Galinsky said to the agent that he?d be willing to take a flight the next day. But, he added, could the airline also upgrade him to first class on that subsequent flight? Sure, they said, probably because airlines often have unused first class seats which they offer to frequent flyers as free upgrades. In his shambling, ?oh, by the way? style, Galinsky proceeded to ask for?and received?a hotel room for the night, dinner, and a car service pickup at the airport the next day.

This negotiating technique is called ?the nibble.? Often, when we?re done settling the main terms of an agreement, we act as if the negotiation is over. But in almost any situation, there are tons of extras to be had if only we ask. As in a salary negotiation, benefits like time off and other perks can often be tacked on once the negotiation would traditionally be considered ?over.? As Galinsky noted, ?if you don?t ask for something, you can?t get it.?

4. Disarming with empathy

What happens when a former FBI hostage negotiator buys a car? Would it surprise you to hear that he gets a really good deal? Here?s how Christopher Voss, now a professor of negotiation at Georgetown University, did it:

First, Voss offered a price that was low enough to make the other side peevish, but not so low that they immediately walked away from the table. Then, when they came back with a higher price?instead of going through the usual back and forth of meeting somewhere in the middle?Voss simply said, in the nicest way possible, that theirs was an entirely reasonable price, and he was sorry to be wasting their time, because the truth was that he simply didn?t have enough money to pay what the vehicle was worth.

Suddenly, the seller?s empathy was on Voss?s side, and the rest of the negotiation was, more or less, the seller bargaining with himself, not Voss. Round after round, the car salesman went back to his manager, got a lower price, then offered it to Voss, and round after round, Voss said, apologetically, that he didn?t have the means to pay it.

Eventually, Voss bargained the seller down to his own original, seemingly unreasonable price.

5. Wait

There?s a reason that a venerable high-pressure sales technique is to say that a deal is available ?for a limited time only?: It makes us irrational. There is no price so good that it?s not worth sleeping on. Indeed, saying ?yes? too quickly can even have the unexpected effect of disappointing a seller, because he or she may think that, if you accept it immediately, their initial offer was too low.

One other lesson for negotiating well is that there?s nothing quite like practice. It may seem impolite, but whether it?s your interpersonal relationships or the workplace, in my experience negotiating leads to the opposite of alienation. In the process of revealing what we really want, it allows for a form of engagement, even intimacy, that?s too often absent from our lives. And short of practice, you really ought to listen to the richly textured narratives rounded up by the team at Planet Money.

2013 Smart Guide: Supercomet to outshine the moon

Read more: "2013 Smart Guide: 10 ideas that will shape the year"

Doomsayers disappointed by 2012's non-apocalypse will get a sop in 2013 in the form of a rare supercomet. Once widely seen as a portent of doom, comets are seldom as spectacular as the new arrival, known as C/2012 S1 (ISON), may be. At its peak it may outshine the moon, even by day.

First spotted in September, ISON is rushing towards the sun from the outer solar system. Its closest approach to the sun will be in November, when Timothy Spahr of the Minor Planet Center at Harvard University expects it to put on as good a show as Hale-Bopp did in 1997.

This will be its first trip to the inner solar system, so ISON could contain volatile gases that other comets, making their umpteenth lap around the sun, have lost. That will give us a pristine glimpse of the material in the outer solar system 4.6 billion years ago, when ISON formed.

The year will also herald celestial fireworks of a different flavour, thanks to a gas cloud with three times Earth's mass heading towards the usually placid supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. The collision won't be visible to the naked eye, but X-ray telescopes will pick up radiation from the shock wave created as the cloud slams into the halo of hot gas around the hole.

As the black hole, called Sagittarius A*, sits a mere 25,000 light years away - on our cosmic doorstep - the crash should provide an unprecedented view of material ploughing into a black hole. It could even yield important clues about what happened 300 years ago, when the black hole was much brighter than now.

Official: Navy SEAL commander died of apparent suicide

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. military officials are investigating the apparent suicide of a Navy SEAL commander in Afghanistan.

Navy SEAL Cdr. Job W. Price, 42, of Pottstown, Pa., died Saturday of a non-combat-related injury while supporting stability operations in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan.

A U.S. military official said the death "appears to be the result of suicide." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the death is still being investigated.

"The Naval Special Warfare family is deeply saddened by the loss of our teammate," said Capt. Robert Smith, Commander of Naval Special Warfare Group Two, which manages all Virginia-based Navy SEAL teams. "We extend our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and NSW community during this time of grieving."

"As we mourn the loss and honor the memory of our fallen teammate, those he served with will continue to carry out the mission," Smith added Sunday.

A U.S. military official confirmed Price was from Virginia Beach, Va.-based SEAL Team 4, which is part of the mission to train Afghan local police to stave off the Taliban in remote parts of Afghanistan. Price is survived by a wife and a daughter.

Keep your home safe for the holidays

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHI) - Many families that travel across the country during the holiday season often leave their homes vulnerable to thieves.???

Indiana State Police often see a spike in thefts throughout the holiday season.

Before travelers head out the door for Christmas they might want to double check their house.

Sergeant Joe Watts, with the Indiana State Police said an easy item to grab is presents.

If a family leaves town, Watts says they'll want to make sure to hide their gifts and cover their windows. It could help deter a thief from snooping.

Watts says, "They'll simply bust the glass, reach in and unlock the door or window and gain a quick entry. What they're looking for are mostly firearms, jewelry and electronic items. Something that will give them quick cash and is valuable but yet they can get out of the house in a quick time."

Watts says watch out for writing a quick message or post because it could make you an open target.

A good rule of thumb, avoid social media sites before you leave town to help make it less tempting to share travel plans, our sister station WTHI reports.

"It let's the burglars know, hey that family is going to be out of town for seven to ten days. They may be out of country so we'll have plenty of time to do what we need to do at that residence. So that is a terrible idea," said Watts.

Finally, Watts says have a plan in place before you head out.

"Make sure you lock doors, make sure you lock windows, and make sure you have a trusted family member or friend that's watching your house for you. Lights on timers are a good option that way people don't know when you are coming or going," said Watts.

These tips could keep your presents safe and thieves' presence away.

Indiana State Police say most burglaries happen between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

NRA returns to public debate, to meet with media

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One week after the mass shootings that killed 26 people at a Connecticut elementary school ? 20 of them children ? the nation's largest gun-rights lobby is returning to the spotlight as Congress prepares to consider tighter restrictions on firearms in the new year.

The 4.3 million-member National Rifle Association largely disappeared from public debate after the shootings in Newtown, Conn., choosing atypical silence as a strategy as the nation sought answers after the rampage. The NRA took down its Facebook page and kept silent on Twitter.

Unlike its actions in the wake of other mass shootings, the group did not put out a statement of condolence for the victims while simultaneously defending the rights of gun owners.

That strategy, however, is set to change, starting with a news conference Friday.

In the lead-up, the group re-activated its Facebook account ? it has 1.7 million members ? and its Twitter feed now warns supporters that "President Obama supports gun control measures, including reinstating an assault weapons ban." The group also announced that its top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, planned to appear Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" program.

It's an about-face from the group that ignored requests for comment and shunned media attention for four days following last week's shootings.

"The National Rifle Association of America is made up of 4 million moms and dads, sons and daughters and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown," the group said in its first public statement since the shootings, released Tuesday. "Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting."

The group also promised "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again" and announced plans for Friday's news conference on what is, in reality, the last real work day before Washington scatters for the long Christmas holiday.

Since the slayings, President Barack Obama has demanded "real action, right now" against U.S. gun violence and called on the NRA to join the effort. Moving quickly after several congressional gun-rights supporters said they would consider new legislation to control firearms, the president said this week he wants proposals on reducing gun violence that he can take to Congress by January.

Obama has already asked Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and pass legislation that would end a provision that allows people to purchase firearms from private parties without a background check. Obama also has indicated that he wants Congress to pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity magazines.

Panel on Benghazi attack heaps blame on State, citing 'systemic failures'

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

An independent panel investigating the 9/11 attack on the United States consulate in Benghazi concluded that the State Department suffered ?systemic failures? in providing adequate security.

The failures listed in a report released last night include relying too heavily on poorly trained local militias for security; ?leadership and management? deficiencies in coordination of two important State Department bureaus; and an ?under resourced? embassy lacking adequate security equipment, such as security cameras and outer perimeter walls high enough to protect the compound.

?Systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels within two bureaus of the State Department ? resulted in a Special Mission security posture that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place,? according to the report. The panel, known as an Accountability Review Board, was made up of five people appointed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, including Adm. Mike Mullen and longtime US diplomat Thomas Pickering.

The Benghazi attack, which fell on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, killed four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. It highlighted the depth of lawlessness still plaguing the country in the aftermath of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi's ouster.

?The attack on the US consulate was just the latest in a series of incidents,? Mohamed Abu Janah, a local radio executive and one of the protest?s organizers, told The Christian Science Monitor in September.

RELATED ? Think you know the Middle East? Take our geography quiz.

The month before the attack, in a piece titled ?Worrying signs of lawlessness in Libya,? The Monitor?s Dan Murphy noted that some of the militias that fought to oust Qaddafi had taken on gang-like qualities. ?Generally untouchable, they continue to swagger through Libya's towns and cities, demanding special treatment as a reward for their role last year. Many of them are now technically integrated into the security services, but continue to operate with impunity,? Mr. Murphy wrote.

He warned that ?[T]he steady drumbeat of problems is worrying. If it isn't dealt with, 'rat-a-tat-tat' can transform into 'boom.' "

According to The New York Times, these signs of insecurity were, in part, ignored in planning security for the US Mission in Libya.

The panel also said American intelligence officials had relied too much on specific warnings of imminent attacks, which they did not have in the case of Benghazi, rather than basing assessments more broadly on a deteriorating security environment. By this spring, Benghazi, a hotbed of militant activity in eastern Libya, had experienced a string of assassinations, an attack on a British envoy?s motorcade and the explosion of a bomb outside the American Mission.

The Los Angeles Times notes that the report is ?likely to represent the government?s lasting judgment on the attacks.? According to the document, the attack was:

the calculated effort of militants and not a "spontaneous" reaction of an outraged crowd, the first explanation offered by U.S. officials.

Yet the five-member independent panel said that, despite the lapses, no officials had failed to carry out their duties in a way that required disciplinary action.

It also determined that there had been "no immediate, specific intelligence" on the threat against the mission.

The Obama administration's initial response to the attacks and United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice?s inconsistent statements describing the events of the night garnered anger from lawmakers in the weeks leading up to the presidential election.

?The report affirmed there were no protests of an anti-Islamic video before the attack, contrary to what Ms. Rice had said on several Sunday talk shows days after the attack,? notes the Times. This confirmation could reignite arguments that the White House ?politicized? Ambassador Steven?s death and the embassy attack.

The Monitor reports that, ?At issue were her statements over what had precipitated the attack on the US mission in Benghazi.?

Recommended: Hillary Clinton for president? Eight Democrats who might run next time.

The legacy of Secretary of State Clinton could also be tarnished by last night?s panel report.

"This is a mark against Secretary Clinton. While she was not singled out, the report highlighted the lack of leadership and organization on security issues, and those fall into her bailiwick," Jon Alterman, head of the Middle East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Reuters.

An editorial in the Wall Street Journal goes a step further, outlining reasons why Clinton, who is currently recovering from a concussion after fainting earlier this month, should testify on the Benghazi matter.

Mrs. Clinton's testimony is months overdue. Ambassador Chris Stevens and the Benghazi consulate staff reported to her. Their safety was her responsibility. Congress needs to flesh out why security was so lacking, why requests for additional protection for the mission were denied, and who made those decisions.

Despite background briefings by the Pentagon, State and CIA, the Obama Administration hasn't offered a consistent timeline of the Benghazi events. Mrs. Clinton hasn't said what she did that day and precisely how her department liaised with the military and intelligence services. It shouldn't take this long to fill such gaps.

The backdrop to Benghazi matters too. Mrs. Clinton was presumably ? as the President's chief foreign policy adviser ? instrumental in drawing up the "light footprint" policy in Libya. After the fall of Moammar Gadhafi, the US disengaged. As an elected but weak government struggled to establish itself in Libya, Islamist militias with al Qaeda ties filled the gap. One such group, Ansar al-Shariah, laid siege to the U.S. consulate and CIA annex in Benghazi, killing four Americans. Both the CIA and State immediately pulled out of the city?an abject retreat. What was the rationale for the U.S. approach to Libya, and will it change?

Mrs. Clinton will soon leave the Obama cabinet with sky-high approval ratings and an eye on the 2016 presidential nomination. It's logical for her not to want to dwell on the worst debacle of her tenure at State. But two months ago, she said "I take responsibility" for Libya without ever doing so. It's well past time she did.

According to Reuters, Clinton ?said in a letter accompanying the review that she would adopt all of its recommendations.? And the Los Angeles Times reports she is already taking steps to rectify problems identified in the report, including asking for a transfer of $1.3 billion from Congress.

They say the State Department is asking permission from Congress to transfer more than $1.3 billion from contingency funds that had been allocated for spending in Iraq. This includes $553 million for hundreds of additional Marine security guards worldwide; $130 million for diplomatic security personnel; and $691 million for improving security at installations abroad.

Israeli PM vows to build in Jerusalem despite criticism

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday his government would press ahead with expanding Jewish settlements around Jerusalem despite Western criticism of its plan to build 6,000 more homes in territory Palestinians seek for a state.

In addition to several thousand housing units approved earlier this month, Israeli media reported that initial approval was granted on Wednesday for construction of another 3,400 units in Jerusalem and in the West Bank.

Israel captured east Jerusalem in a 1967 war and annexed it as part of its capital in a move never recognized internationally. Palestinians want the area to be capital of a state they seek to establish in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, land also captured by Israel.

"We are going to build in Jerusalem for all its residents, this is something that has been done by all previous governments and this is something that my government will continue to do," Netanyahu said in a meeting with foreign ambassadors.

"Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish people for 3,000 years," Netanyahu said. "Imagine that you would limit construction in your own capital, it doesn't make sense."

Netanyahu launched his latest settlement expansion push after Palestinians won de facto recognition as a state in a United Nations vote last month.

Israeli analysts see the settlement drive as also an effort by Netanyahu to enhance support for his right-wing Likud party against other hawkish rivals in a January 22 parliamentary election he is expected to win.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Netanyahu, said only 3,000 settlement housing units had as yet received formal cabinet approval, and that it could take years to until more construction was launched.

In a written statement to reporters, Regev said the housing units being planned were "in Jerusalem and the settlement blocs" Israel seeks to keep under any peace deal.

Most world powers deem Israeli settlements illegal and say they are an obstacle to peace. The Palestinians say Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank will deny them a viable state.

The United States and Europe have strongly condemned Israel's latest building plans, and Israeli ambassadors were summoned earlier this month for a reprimand in at least half a dozen European capitals.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said this week that Washington was "deeply disappointed that Israel insists on continuing this pattern of provocative action."

Nuland said settlement expansion put the goal of achieving a two-state solution already delayed by peace talks being stalled for two years, "further at risk."

Nimr Hammad, a spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas told Palestinian radio the Palestinians may protest "to the (U.N.) Security Council and seek a resolution there" against Israel's latest settlement plans.

the Shift Age! - David Houle - MediaBizBloggers.com

Published: December 18, 2012 at 06:56 AM GMT
Last Updated: December 18, 2012 at 06:56 AM GMT By David Houle

We have left the Information Age and entered the Shift Age. This new age is an era of transformation unparalleled in terms of the amount of change that will occur is the next 20-30 years.

As long time readers of this column know, I have been writing and speaking about the Shift Age since 2007 and my first book of that name was published exactly 5 years ago this month. In serendipitous celebration of that anniversary, my biggest and best book about the future of humanity is being published on January 1, 2013. Parts One and Two of that book, "Entering the Shift Age" are now available as a mini-eBook, "Welcome to the Shift Age" where I look at the new age, the twenty year period 1985-2005 and the three forces of the Shift Age.

The Threshold Decades ? 1985-2005

A threshold is a place of entering or beginning. It is also a place between two rooms. The Threshold Decades is the 20-year period between the room of what was and the room of what will be. This 20-year period was a time of incredible change, a time when our worldview, our accepted economic models and how we thought about almost everything changed. Just think all that came into being and then was spread around the world: personal computers, cable television, fax machines, cell phones, laptops and the of course the early stages of the Internet. This 20-year period was the time when most of the world moved from analogue to digital with incredible consequences particularly relative to computing, media and all forms of content.

Historians will look back on this 20-year period as a clear demarcation between the past and the future, a significant time bridge from the wonders and inventions of the 20th century and the incredible alterations for humanity in the 21st century. It was a time when the Three Forces of the Shift Age took shape and took off.

The Three Forces of the Shift Age

There are many forces at play in the world today. That said there are three dominant forces that upon reflection are the source of most of the transformative, disruptive and sometime overwhelming changes we are now experiencing.

The Flow to Global

The Flow to Global is far more than just the 15-20 year old global economy. Humanity is being reorganized around the global construct. We are entering the global stage of human evolution, nothing less. This means that the world "globalization" is no longer an economic term. It is a term that describes what is and will be occurring in most areas of human society now through the next 15-20 years. We are getting reorganized around all of us. This is truly the evolutionary next step for humanity.

The Flow to the Individual

The Flow to the Individual had its roots in the Threshold Decade, when, in the developed countries there was an explosion of choice. Television channels, radio stations, books published, web sites, even brands of toothpaste exploded in number. This meant that the power moved from the producer to the consumer, from the institution to the individual. We as individuals have more power than individuals have ever had before.

So, at the same time that we are flowing to a global reorganization we are becoming ever more powerful as individuals. This flow of power and shape to all of us and each of us has of course created extreme disruption to many of the institutional constructs that have been in place for the last 100 years.

Both the Flow to the Global and the Flow to the Individual have, are, and will be amplified by the single most powerful force at play in the world today, and one of the most powerful forces in history.

The Accelerating Connectedness of Humanity

Humanity has become connected at a level never before experienced. In 1985, at the beginning of the Threshold Decades, there were approximately 750,000 cell phone users in the world. During the first few years of the Shift Age, 2006-2010 there were almost twice as many new, first time cell phone users, 1.5 million, being activated every day!

There are now approximately 5.6 billion cell phone users in a global population of 7.1 billion, so we basically have cell phone ubiquity today. If I call someone 20 feet away from me, cell phone to cell phone, it will probably take about 5 seconds for her phone to ring. If I were to call someone on another continent 12,000 miles away, it might take an extra 2-3 seconds due to the relay of the signal off a satellite. So there is no time, distance or place any longer limiting human communication. That could not be said 5 years ago let alone 25 or 50 years ago. This has, for the first time altered the concept of place, certainly in human communications.
