Six Tips on How to Care for Your Ugg Boots | Footnotes - by Lamey ...

Lamey Wellehan has sold thousands and thousands of Ugg boots over the years and the most common questions we are asked involve how to care for them.? After all, they are a big investment.? Here are some quick tips on how to keep your Ugg boots lasting a long time.

1)????? Know Their Limits:? Uggs are a fashion/comfort brand and they are not intended for shoveling, exploring or athletic use.? Uggs are made of shearling, which is sheepskin that has gone through limited tanning and has the wool still attached.? It is the same material used in many slippers.? The material is soft and comfortable but is delicate and can stain and scratch more easily than other uppers.

2)????? Be Preventative:? By limiting their use, your boots will last longer.? Don?t wear them in harsh environments like through deep puddles, streams or in slush.? They are actually designed to be worn barefoot, as the natural wool fibers have a wicking effect.? However, if you perspire more than others you may want to wear a thin sock to help reduce internal odors.

3)????? Protection:? An overcoat of a protective spray may help to reduce staining of the upper.? Do not use any oil-based sprays as they will darken the sheepskin.? Instead, use the water-repellant spray designed by the Ugg brand itself (although other brands are available).? Apply on a clean boot, as spraying over dirt or stains will only seal-in the stain.? Shake the spray well before applying and test the treatment on a less obvious part of the boot first and allow to dry, to see if there is any negative effect on the upper.? Remember, the sprays are a water-repellant and don?t make the boot water-proof but just help water to bead-off.

4)????? Cleaning Expectations:? This can be a little tricky.? The uppers on Uggs are soft and mostly unfinished, meaning the natural skin has not been coated or sealed.? They will show signs of wear more quickly than other boots and are more prone to oil-based staining.? Ugg makes a boot cleaner which is a little like a boot shampoo.? It is important to read the directions on the bottle carefully as it is a concentrated liquid that needs to be diluted.? Note that the cleaner works well to remove surface dirt but not much can be done against oil or grease stains.

5)????? Drying:? The most important thing with Uggs are to keep them away from direct heat.? Sheepskin has natural oils in them and placing them next to a heat source will dry these oils out and the uppers will get stiff.? To dry, stuff them with a hand towel to absorb the moisture and to help retain shape.? Replace the damp towels with a dry one as needed and in a couple days your boots will be dry.

6)????? Keeping Them Soft:? You can restore some of the soft knap of the uppers by brushing your boots with a suede brush.? It needs to be a soft brush, not the stiff kind as the uppers can scratch.? On the inside, keep them comfortable by shaking out any dirt or use a vacuum hose.? The ?fluff? of the boots will flatten a bit over time and the uppers will stretch, but replacement wool insoles can be purchased for about $15, which can really revitalize the comfort.

Many people consider Uggs to be the world?s most comfortable boots.? They are warm, are soft and are perfect for chilly Maine weather.? Taking care of them will ensure years of having happy feet!
