Keep your home safe for the holidays

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHI) - Many families that travel across the country during the holiday season often leave their homes vulnerable to thieves.???

Indiana State Police often see a spike in thefts throughout the holiday season.

Before travelers head out the door for Christmas they might want to double check their house.

Sergeant Joe Watts, with the Indiana State Police said an easy item to grab is presents.

If a family leaves town, Watts says they'll want to make sure to hide their gifts and cover their windows. It could help deter a thief from snooping.

Watts says, "They'll simply bust the glass, reach in and unlock the door or window and gain a quick entry. What they're looking for are mostly firearms, jewelry and electronic items. Something that will give them quick cash and is valuable but yet they can get out of the house in a quick time."

Watts says watch out for writing a quick message or post because it could make you an open target.

A good rule of thumb, avoid social media sites before you leave town to help make it less tempting to share travel plans, our sister station WTHI reports.

"It let's the burglars know, hey that family is going to be out of town for seven to ten days. They may be out of country so we'll have plenty of time to do what we need to do at that residence. So that is a terrible idea," said Watts.

Finally, Watts says have a plan in place before you head out.

"Make sure you lock doors, make sure you lock windows, and make sure you have a trusted family member or friend that's watching your house for you. Lights on timers are a good option that way people don't know when you are coming or going," said Watts.

These tips could keep your presents safe and thieves' presence away.

Indiana State Police say most burglaries happen between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
