New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the new director of South Carolina?s health agency wisely have targeted obesity as public health enemy number one. But we think the ideas proposed by Catherine Templeton will be more effective.
Bloomberg wants to limit the size of sugary drinks sold in New York City?s restaurants, movie theaters, stadiums and other venues. Templeton, confirmed in February as director of the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, believes South Carolina should target its worst pockets of obesity.
While their strategies are different, Bloomberg and Templeton have picked the right fight. Obesity has become the biggest threat to public health throughout the country. Statistics show that every state has an obesity rate of at least 20 percent. Thirty-six states have rates of at least 25 percent, and 12 have rates that top 30 percent.
South Carolina is one of the 12 worst states. In fact, we?re fourth worst, with an obesity rate of 31.5 percent.
